The market cooled — but it didn't collapse
Among graduates who finished in 2023/24 and were surveyed about 15 months later, 81% were in some form of work, but full-time employment slipped to 57% — down two percentage points on the year before — and unemployment ticked up to 7%. What that means in practice: there are still good graduate jobs, but more people are going for each one, so how you apply matters more than it did a couple of years ago.
Your degree gets you in the room; your application gets you the interview
Most graduates applying for the same scheme have broadly similar degrees. What separates the shortlisted from the rest is rarely the classification — it's how well the application is tailored to the specific role.

Lead with evidence, not adjectives. “Strong team player” means nothing on its own. “Coordinated a six-person group project that finished a week early” means everything. Turn your degree projects, part-time jobs and societies into short, specific examples of what you actually did.

A simple plan for the next fortnight
Pick three or four roles you'd genuinely be glad to get. For each, tailor your CV to the advert's language, prepare six to eight strong examples you can flex across competency questions, and do one full practice run of a video or panel interview before the real thing. Steady and specific beats fast and generic — every time.
