How graduate schemes work
Most UK graduate schemes run a multi-stage process: an online application, often with a few short questions or a CV; online tests (numerical, verbal, situational judgement); one or more interviews (increasingly recorded or one-way); and an assessment centre. Each stage filters, so the goal is simply to pass to the next.
Apply early — timing matters
Many large schemes recruit on a rolling basis and close once they're full, sometimes months before the stated deadline. If a scheme opens in the autumn, applying early in the cycle genuinely improves your odds. Keep a simple tracker of deadlines and where you are with each.
Nail the application questions
Those "Why this company?" and "Tell us about a time you…" questions are where most applications are rejected. Employers want evidence, not enthusiasm. For competency questions, use a clear situation → action → result shape and a real, specific example. For "why us", show you understand what this employer actually does and why it fits you — generic answers are obvious and easy to reject.
Prepare for tests and assessment centres
Practise the online tests in advance so the format doesn't surprise you. What is a situational judgement test?

Do I need a 2:1 to get on a graduate scheme?
Many schemes ask for a 2:1, but not all — some have dropped strict grade requirements or consider your wider strengths and context. Always check each employer's criteria and don't rule yourself out.
