The first 72 hours after a layoff

• Your final paycheck. Georgia sets no strict deadline in law, so final wages are customarily paid by the next regular payday. If yours is late, follow up in writing.
• File for unemployment right away. Georgia's benefit is modest — up to $365 a week (minimum $55) — and the duration is tied to the state's jobless rate, currently around 14 weeks (up to 20 in tougher times). File at dol.georgia.gov. Because it's lower and shorter than most states, start your job search the same week.
• Sort out health cover through HealthCare.gov (a job loss lets you enroll outside open enrollment) or continue your plan via COBRA.
• Don't rush to sign severance — it usually asks you to give up the right to sue. Read it, and have it reviewed, first.

Your rights when you're let go in Georgia

• Strongly at-will. Georgia is one of the most firmly at-will states — but you still can't be fired for an unlawful reason like discrimination or retaliation, handled by the federal EEOC.
• Layoff notice. Georgia has no state WARN law, but the federal WARN Act can require larger employers (100+ staff) to give 60 days' notice of a mass layoff or plant closing.
• No state pay-transparency law and no required severance. Georgia leans on federal minimums — which makes your own preparation the thing that moves the needle.
